Pied-a-Terre on Cambie Street

Pied-a-Terre is a hidden gem at Cambie at 18th. The French Bistro takes diners away from the traffic and sounds of busy Cambie street and transports them to France the instant a foot has passed the threshold. Seating only 30 guests, the intimate and tastefully decorated room is filled with the smells of France and sound of jovial chatter.

Pied-a-Terre is one of three restaurants owned by Chef Andrey Durbach and his business partner Chris Stewart. Parkside, in Vancouver's West End, and La Buca, at McDonald and 24th, are equally renowned for their amazing food and outstanding service.

Then menu is quintessential French cuisine, with everything from Fois Gras Parfait to Creme Caramel, even the pickiest eater will find something on the menu. A Table D'Hote is available for $29.50 and includes three courses; soup or salad, trout or beef, and chocolate mousse or creme caramel. It is outstanding value and showcases some of the best the restaurant has to offer. Even a green salad brings exclamations of delight with a light vinaigrette and crunchy salt pieces making it something incredibly special.

The trout is cooked to perfection with green beans, baby carrots and potatoes complementing the fish to perfection. And, the chocolate mousse is something else. Rich and smooth, but not overpoweringly sweet, it reminds guests why the cocoa bean was first revered and commercialised.

The wait staff are friendly and helpful, offering informed recommendations for diners without trying to upsell.

With an extensive wine list that offers both affordable and extravagant options, Pied-a-Terre will not leave visitors wanting. And, with a bill for two, including a $40 bottle of wine, coming in at around $120 with tip, it will also leave your wallet satisfied. This is five-star food for a three-star price.

Reservations are a must. 604 873 3131.

I just checked their menu. I'm not sure if the lamb is still served at Pied-A-Terre. Good review nonetheless.
