Banana Leaf is a Malaysian Delight on Broadway, Vancouver

Banana Leaf on Broadway and Willow in Vancouver serves up Malaysian Cuisine at award-winning standards.

With a list of accolades the length of your arm, the unassuming restaurant comes highly recommended. Such praises as this lead to high expectations, and high expectations can often lead to disappointment.

Not so at the Banana Leaf.

The perpetually packed restaurant is full with good reason. Their spring rolls are crispy and light, the roti soft and pliable, the Rendang Beef lives up to its reputation, and who could pass up a perfectly cooked banana with ice cream and caramel sauce?

The restaurant is decked out with the obligatory Asian ornaments, colourful cloths and a little greenery. Staff are friendly and efficient.

The wine list is predominantly Okanagan wines, which is a nice touch. It is also reasonably-priced with listings from $28-$48.

If you're there with a significant other, a wonderful option is the tasting menu for two. It is seven delightful courses that showcase some of the restaurant's signature offerings. But, make sure to go with lots of space in your belly - attempting this colossus is not for the feint-hearted. And, at only $25 pp it is also a bargain.

A favourite dish of many that frequent the Banana Leaf is the seafood and chicken fried rice in a pineapple boat. The dish of fried rice mixed with seafood, chicken, egg, raisins, corn & sunflower seeds is served in a half a pineapple. Not only does it taste great, it looks incredibly unique too.

Booking is a must at the Banana Leaf, especially for dinner. There are three locations: Broadway, Denman and Kitsilano.

The fried rice in a pineapple boat is my favourite dish as well, and the portions are huge. I always find it great to visit with a few friends and share multiple dishes, that way, you get a taste of everything at a cost that is completely worth it!

Any Comments?

I've got a lot of theories. Some are based on observation of others, some are based on experiences. Others are based on equal parts intuition, bullshit and ego. This theory is based on the last one on the list.
